WHO IS RINAE? Often, the first impression she creates is a shy, nervous teenage girl, due to her uncertain speech and timid posture. But anyone who spends more time with her discovers that she's actually quite energetic, and also a bit of a klutz. When invested in something, she puts everything she has into it, creating a bit of an "all or nothing" approach, so she rarely does anything by halves. (Which, funny enough, applies even to how she comes across.)

WHY CONTRACT? Once, Rinae was just an ordinary girl struggling with anxiety. With her father away overseas for his career, her mother working as a salarywoman, and no siblings, she was often babysat by her grandmother, until she passed away when Rinae was still in primary school. At an early age, she grew used to taking care of herself, including entertaining herself. Her anxiety has always made it difficult for her to reach out and connect with others, so she never really had friends. She supplemented her lonely life with animal friends and video games.

In her teenage years, she engaged more and more with the Internet and MMOs, using the name LINNET for herself. Rinae discovered that online, as Linnet, it was easier for her to express herself and connect to others. Unfortunately, this only highlighted her loneliness in her offline life. As her misery deepened, Kyubey appeared to her and offered to grant her a single miraculous wish in exchange for becoming a magical girl and fighting witches. Rinae didn't immediately accept, at first disbelieving, and then unable to comprehend what would make her so special as to be chosen.

But one night, after social circle drama broke apart the MMO guild she belonged to, Rinae was wracked with anxiety over feeling like she'd been cast aside by her only friends. In the end, she felt exhausted by her fear, and came to the conclusion she didn't want to live the way she had been. She made her contract with Kyubey, hoping to change her life for the better, wishing that she wasn't so scared to be like her online persona.
